What Is Instagram's Restrict Feature and How Do You Use It?
Instagram's "Restrict" feature lets you limit someone's interaction with you without blocking them outright. It's especially useful for people who leave uncomfortable comments but whom you don't want to fully block.
What Does Restricting Someone Do?
- Comments from a restricted person are only visible to them, not to your other followers (unless you approve them).
- Messages they send you go to the "Requests" folder, and you don't get a notification that they messaged you.
- They can't see when you're active or whether you've read their message.
- The restricted person doesn't get notified — they can still access your profile and won't feel blocked.
How to Restrict Someone
Go to the person's profile → tap the ☰ (three-dot) menu in the top right → tap "Restrict". You can also do this by pressing and holding one of their comments.
Restrict or Block?
If you want to cut off contact with someone completely, blocking is the more definitive solution. But if you want to create distance without ending the relationship entirely, restricting is the gentler option.
